Buffing Compounds

Polishing stabilized stabilized pen blanks to a high gloss, even after the use of extremely fine abrasives, is possible by first using Tripoli and then using the White Diamond buffing compounds. These compounds contain extremely fine abrasive that are designed to remove any light scratches produced by paper and/or cloth abrasives. The Tripoli bar is priced at $4.50 and the White Diamond is priced at $4.50. Each bar will polish thousand's of pens as very little of this material is needed on your buffing wheels.

You will need two separate buffing wheels for the process to work successfully as you do not want to use the same wheel for both compounds.

If you sand out to 12,000 Micro-Mesh you will only need the White Diamond compound.

Tube Insertion Tool for Large Pen Kits

Ever used a regular size pen tube insertion tool on the cigar, El Grande, El Presidente or larger pens?  In most cases the end of the normal insertion tool will push out the plug on the other end of the tube used to keep glue out.  This tool was designed for the larger kits so that the plugs won't be pushed out.  It even works on the little short tube of the El Toro fountain pen!

Constructed from Type 303 stainless steel this instrument will last a lifetime.  A 1/4"-20 thread shaft is provided so that you can create and install your own handle.  The cost of this handy tool is $11.95.   To Order Click Here

We also offer the insertion tool complete with a Delrin handle at $15.95

Universal Tube Insertion Tool for Pen Kits

We now offer the same type of tool that fits all tube sizes.  It is also constructed of Type 303 stainless steel, has a 1/4" x 20 threaded shaft and uses the same Delrin handle.

Universal Tube Insertion Tool  $10.95

Universal Tube Insertion Tool with Delrin Handle  $ 15.95

Berea Cap Gauge

Mylands TM Finishing Products

Mylands TM Friction Polish

High Build Friction Polish
There are three popular ways of finishing with this product to produce stunning results. Sand the turned item using a cloth backed abrasive to at least 400grade quality.

Apply the high build with a lint free cotton cloth, lightly, whilst the item is turning. Achieving the desired build may require stopping application occasionally, lightly de-nibbing, and then continuing application.

If the turned item is to be handled regularly then seal in the friction polish with an additional application of a Carnauba Wax Stick. This is applied with the lathe at high speed passing from one end of the piece to the other, exerting minimal pressure. Buff with a clean piece of cotton cloth. This can then be handled for years, retaining the original look.

An excellent finish for your pens and other small projects.  Very easy to apply and produces a high gloss finish.
16.2oz bottle: $18.99   Click Here to order 16.2 oz. size

Please note that Mylands Friction Polish is shipped by UPS ground transportation ONLY.

Mylands TM  Cellulose Sanding Sealer

Cellulose Sanding Sealer
Cellulose Sanding Sealer has been sprayed onto reproduction furniture for years as a sealer prior to applications of Cellulose Lacquer.

It is also effective as a quick drying clear sealer prior to applications of High Build Friction Polish and Melamine Lacquer. It can also be used in conjunction with clear wax polish to give a quick-dry low sheen, water resistant finish. Apply Cellulose Sanding Sealer while the lathe is stationary with a rag or brush.

A cellulose sanding sealer that is lacquer based and dries to a hard finish.  Recommended for use on natural (non-stabilized) wood.  Can be used alone as a finish but also provides an excellent base for Mylands Friction Polish.  16.2oz can:  $15.99.

Mylands TM  Melamine Lacquer

Melamine Lacquer
For open grained timbers seal first with Cellulose Sanding Sealer. Apply thin coats of Melamine Lacquer with a brush or cloth.

Melamine Lacquer can be thinned with Mylands Cellulose Thinners. De-nib or cut back with a fine abrasive. Melamine Lacquer produces a water resistant, clear hard wearing finish.

Satin Finish - As above

Matt Finish - Cut back lightly with steel wool

Gloss Finish - Wax with Renaissance Wax

A durable, hard wearing, quick drying and easily applied finish.  Melamine lacquer produces a semi-gloss finish that is resistant to moisture and heat.  A great finish for pens and bottle stoppers.  Recommended for use on natural (non-stabilized) wood.  It is recommended that Mylands Cellulose Sanding Sealer be used prior to Melamine Lacquer.  16.2oz can:  $15.99.

Base Plate Wax

I highly recommend the use of Base Plate Wax when gluing your tubes with any type of glue.

Base plate wax is used to plug the end of your pen tubes to keep any glue from entering the tube.  Use the tube like a cookie-cutter.  It works great!  Each sheet of wax is priced at 35 cents each.  The number of tubes the wax will plug will be dependent on the tube size and it keeps the inside of your tubes free of glue.  Works with Gorilla Glue TM, epoxy and Cyanoacrylate glues.

It was 113 here yesterday....

A friend and customer called the other day and in the course of our conversation he mentioned that he had a dog that was fourteen years old and was showing signs of age.  I asked him if he had ever read "The Dog's Prayer" and he had not heard of it.  As a courtesy to him and to others that have not read it I am posting it here.  Kleenex will be needed.....

A Dog's Prayer

Treat me kindly, my beloved master, for no heart in all the world is more grateful for kindness than the loving heart of me.

Do not break my spirit with a stick, for though I should lick your hand between the blows, your patience and understanding will more quickly teach me the things you would have me do.

Speak to me often, for your voice is the world's sweetest music, as you must know by the fierce wagging of my tail when your footstep falls upon my waiting ear.

When it is cold and wet, please take me inside... for I am now a domesticated animal, no longer used to bitter elements... and I ask no greater glory than the privilege of sitting at your feet beside the hearth... though had you no home, I would rather follow you through ice and snow than rest upon the softest pillow in the warmest home in all the land... for you are my god... and I am your devoted worshiper.

Keep my pan filled with fresh water, for although I should not reproach you were it dry, I cannot tell you when I suffer thirst. Feed me clean food, that I may stay well, to romp and play and do your bidding, to walk by your side, and stand ready, willing and able to protect you with my life, should your life be in danger.

And, beloved master, should the Great Master see fit to deprive me of my health or sight, do not turn me away from you. Rather hold me gently in your arms as skilled hands grant me the merciful boon of eternal rest...and I will leave you knowing with the last breath I drew, my fate was ever safest in your hands.
